1000 Miglia: 1927-1933 Volume 1 (Mille Miglia) The Official Simulator; was released on the Amiga, C64 and PC in 1991. This is an Italian racing game, crafted by Italian Mario Savoia. It specialises in that authentic 1920s and 30's atmosphere, but can you select a car to make it around the entire course in one piece?

I remember the first time I played this game, quite some time ago, when making the Top 50 Driving Games videos. I had low expectations because this was a Simulmondo game, but after trying the first level, it didn't even meet my lowest expectations, with difficult and unresponsive driving, and a staggeringly unfun and twisty roads. Recently, I watched someone play the PC version:

It was helpful to hear someone walk me through the game. This peaked my enthusiasm, and sure enough, trying again I realised there was indeed a fun driving game buried deep in there. It took a few plays to master the first level, there I realised these old cars handle unresponsively, and choosing the driver skill and a better car helped. Starting the recorder, I made it to about the same point as the other guys video, and I think he went out with a broken dynamo or something like that.
The audio balancing was a bit of an issue, as the title music seems to play quietly, while the in-game sound effects seem quite loud. I think I sound a bit shouty unless you turn down the volume quite a bit. I found the box art on Mobygames, and the Amiga Power from The Magazine Rack web site. Not much info on this title or stuff to add really. Of course there are some pronunciation bugs.
Danscore:
As a huge fan of Outrun Europa on the Amiga; with it's fantastic tour of Europe, this game comes close to replicating that feeling, only this time it's a tour of Italy. The landscapes change with every level, and it's possible to see little villages nestled in the hills on some stages, to complement the lovingly recreated clouds and scenery. An Amiga driving game would not be complete without some walnut wood panelling, and an operational dash board. The graphics are fast and smooth enough to give a sense of speed, so this game is no slouch with the bit blitter. Handling of the old cars is fairly representative of unresponsive steering and non-existent brakes. In fact, the cars in this game have much BETTER brakes than in real life!
The problem comes with thundering around every corner at top speed, and then getting ready on the brakes as soon as it starts to get sharp, in the hope of making it around. Added to that the fact the other drivers (instead of making you faster) will slow you down when they bump the car from behind. Multiply that by sometimes over 100 corners on some stages, and you find this control mechanic gets wearisome, tiring, and gruelling, to the point where players pray for the line for a rest. With something like CC3 or Lotus, this was never an issue, and Outrun Europa actually changed game mechanics with each level. I wondered, given the random breakdowns, if anyone ever completed it without cheats. Of course there is always one who comments about it online, but for the vast majority, something like this does not inspire good times, and so I can only give this a 6 at most, mainly for the graphics and sound, and IF you can get beyond the difficulty wall. If you can't, then it needs 5 for sure.
