REVIEW: (Posted originally on Instagram):
-The problem with pushing hardware to produce games that look ahead of their time, is that when time catches up, current hardware very quickly makes such games look dated!
The sycophantic obsession with all things three dimensional the 32-bit generation reveled in, demanded all that came before it be considered wildly inferior. Of course with a modern perspective we now see that way of thinking was nonsense there's no better example of this than Pilotwings.
It's no false praise to exaggerate just how impressive this game looks, especially given it doesnt include the fancy FX chips of Star Fox and such ilk. Personally I dont think it's aged half as poorly either! The wonderfully detailed, colourful yet equally peaceful environments training missions take place within, create a kind of special tranquility to gameplay that feels distinctly unique and kinda magical, there I said it! Of course the caveat comes with in difficulty!
Pilotwings is a tough game make no mistake! This is not something that pure practice alone will make perfect. The nuance in control is complex and tiny input changes between attempts can produce drastically different results! Control varies drastically between aircrafts too, each demanding completely different dedication to master.
Tho early missions give fairly forgiving targets, the latter demand pretty much perfection on at least half your goals and good for the rest. The addition of hidden (rather strange) bonus rounds, offer much needed additional points if you're daring enough to challenge the more difficult landing zones. It's worth the effort, if just for the satisfaction of landing on one of those moving platforms.
The inclusion of 2 combat missions, piloting a helicopter is a nice extra but once again you better master those controls to stand a chance at the final stage.... My god is that a pain in the propeller!
Dated maybe, but still has the Cabin stamp of approval!
