Follow me on instagram @CabinSNES_fever to join me live or via my reviews and uploads to witness me take down all the games currently in my SNES colleciton, following on from having already beaten all 234 licenced UK releases for the NES. I only use original carts, no cheats & no save states.
REVIEW:
-Another Amiga classic finds its way onto both the Snes & Megadrive with neither proving obviously superior. Both ports offer their own minor differences but certainly in looks & framerate, the snes is the obvious winner. For me, the music & SFX offered on the snes has that pumping 90s industrial rave feel to it I really enjoy, however the gritty, dark and metal like Sega offering, maybe preferable to many? It's fair to say either port is an honest representation of the original so whatever you choose will satisfy most.
The dark, gritty tone certainly feels more at home on Sega, but Nintendo haven't let themselves down, with no obvious requirement for any censorship. Its certainly no less fun and that's where this game truly excels.
Propelling the dungeon crawler experience into a futuristic setting, packed with big guns, killer robots & demons is a masterstroke. The staples of the genres routes; mazes, secrets, traps, powerups and hoards of enemy encounters makes up gameplay, but its presentation is fresh, addictive and far more mature than the usual Snes experience
The 2 player co-op is a huge success, offering the option to challenge the game more tactically with a friend, alas in single player mode you're handicapped to playing with the AI. At first impressed by the computer's ability to survive, the mood doesnt last, with frustraions growing ever more apparent each time you're forced to pay the extortionate 500 credits to resurrect it.
The levelling up mechanics are kinda confusing and only offered every 2 stages with your credit total being essential to progression, leaving AI resurrection a constant issue.
Though a password is offered every 4 stages, failure to reach the final part of the game sufficiently levelled, will render tackling the last stage or final boss almost impossible. After many failed attempts, I was reluctantly forced into a 2nd playthrough, thankfully with worlds 3 & 4 memorized almost photographically through so many attempts, progression was easy, leaving me heavily upgraded by the final boss and able to use a simple 'all or nothing' tactic for victory!
A highly recommended addition to any snes collection.
