#126 REALM - FULL PLAYTHROUGH (Normal Mode) - Beating My SNES Games
Once again I have rushed my edit and accidentally added the wrong title to the beginning of the video. This isnt Gunforce, its Realm.
Here is my Full playthrough of Realm done, as always using original hardware on a Super Nintendo with no cheats or save states!
Follow me on instagram @CabinSNES_fever to join me live or via my reviews and uploads to witness me take down all the games currently in my SNES colleciton, following on from having already beaten all 234 licenced UK releases for the NES. I only use original carts, no cheats & no save states.
REVIEW: (Posted originally on Instagram):
-Deep diving into any console library has a tendency to provide some unexpected surprises, that's been the main joy of taking on this challenge. Thus far the process has already presented a pleasant selection of Run-n-Gun surprises; some good (Timeslip), some definitely not (Gunforce), so I had mixed feelings entering in the Realm.
I was hardly wow'd with the first stage, which besides flaunting some, granted, rather impressive sprite and character animation, the overall feel of the game feels kinda disjointed & one dimensional. However as gameplay developes the liveliness really picks up along the difficulty! Not to suggest gamplay until then isnt already difficult, it is, but from stage 3 onwards there's no more f**king about
I think it's no exaggeration to say a heavy influence on Realm's production likely was Treasure's Gunstar Hero's. The look and style of gameplay from stage 3 onwards definitely feels very close to moments of Gunstar, as does the endless melee of mini-bosses, tho despite offering a more diverse selection of firepower, the additional 3 years Realm's production had, doesnt even come close to challenging Gunstar in any department (to be fair it's a high bar!).
The inclusion of infinite continues breathes a little relief into proceedings given just how damn difficult this game can be for novice players. But stages are long and with no extra lives (that I found), finishing is a pretty unforgiving journey.
Gameplay isnt mediocre, but it would be a stretch to claim it as much more than that. Yes some features are clunky, the edge detection and hit boxes are a mess and many bosses feel generic but it does have a strong sense of it's own charm which goes along way with me! It could certainly do with an additional couple of stage tho, 5 just isnt enough to satisfy the appetite.
Overall an evening well spent with another surprisingly better than I expected game. A Selection thats also pretty affordable. That said, given some of the greatest selections the genre has to offer, the becan In search of something with a little more longevity still feels in operation..
