REVIEW:
#115 Demon's Crest (100% Best Ending)
-The People Have Spoken! Well my followers anyway; having succumb to a cowardly wimper in 'beating' this with the worst ending, In hindsight, I think there was only ever one reason why I put the decision to try again in the hands of followers via a vote; I needed a good kick up the backside to inspire the dedication to go at it again.
Besides the obvious shower of glory & admiration I expect from adoring fans on this victorious 100% campaign, it's also fair to say that coming back for more was possibly the most delightful replay I can ever recall. The treaure trove of extra gameplay and layers of depth I'd missed first time through was breath taking. Its kind of remarkable you can even finish the game with so little of it actually played.
Those unfamiliar with the 'Gargoyle' series need not feel ashamed given the franchises continued unsuccessful attempts to break the mainstream, but if ever there was series worthy of 'hidden gem' status, this is it! Criminally underachieving on both the Gameboy & NES, this third installment once again delivers a remarkable game that no one ever played!
Replacing the J-RPG aesthetic of the NES games overworld map & NPC interaction, with a simple 'Mode-7' map to fly around in, the nuts and bolts of the previous games great action is amplified with a host of interesting powerups & skillsets to obtain & bucket loads of secrets to keep up the replay value. Boss fights are a high spectacle, with a seemingly endless progression of encounters throughout, culminating in a very tasty matchup for the penultimate one (clip 1). Many players might mistake this as the final fight, however with 100% you're given a password to a secret final final showdown(clip 2)! Now it gets serious! Let's just say without a wine cellar full of health refills I doubt I'd be writing this now!
The keen eyed may note that during the penultimate battle I was still missing 1 HP container. Indeed all are needed to access the final password & boss encounter but I did return and beat that awful awful mini-game from Hell to get it after, so although not beaten in the correct order, everything was beaten legitimately!
