REVIEW: (Posted originally on Instagram):
-There's no denying the truth that since forming the obsession to conquer my collection, my patience for games that demand a huge time commitment has dwindled. That doesn't deal RPGs a very fair hand & with my previous outing of Lufia 1, resulting in losing 20 hrs of gameplay due to a failed battery, I wasnt exactly dancing with joy to begin another. Thankfully, Secret of Evermore has succeeded in reigniting some of my old passion for the genre and I'm happy to confidently say; "I enjoyed that!"
I'll start by saying I really enjoyed Mana too, no need to sugar coat that fact, it was a great play with fiercely original gameplay mechanics and an engaging story. All features that thankfully transfer easily into Evermore. Where it differs, comes from an obvious attempt by Square to present a less demanding adventure by simplifying gameplay elements. Something I guess it paid for in fan negativity?
The highly original 2 player mechanic no longer exists, with now only 2 characters instead of 3, one being your lovable Dog (incapable of item or magic manipulation), the loss of the multiplayer experience is a serious step backwards. For single player however I actually prefer only having 2 characters, it's one less AI to babysit, and Dog proves increasingly more indispensable as he levels up.
Weapons and magic also see a big change through maxing out at only level 3 instead of 9 as with Mana(at least for weapons anyway). The greatly reduces grinding & weapon charge times which is certainly a thumbs up from me!
It's probably fair to say that general gameplay and certainly bosses also feel a little easier overall too. The addition of certain magic like ENERGIZE & especially Call Beads like AURA, can make short work of even the hardest bosses (Verminator I'm looking your way!!).
What the game doesnt lack is a enjoyable storyline that breathes life into all its cast in a way only Square/Enix seem capable. In looks it echoes all the greatest offerings on the system and it controls very nicely. Sure it ends up being a shorter and more one-dimensional experience than Mana, but it earns its place in any 'greatest Snes' RPG discussions imo!
