Hello friends, and welcome to eight-P-eight-P-eight-P (also known as colon-P-colon-P-colon-P), which appears to be a demo for a custom miniboss coupled with a frustrating autoscroller level.
First off, I love the autoscroller pipe from the first level. That really caught me by surprise, haha. The boss music kicking in was a good touch too. Very well played hack creator, that was a super memorable moment. The rest of the level wasn't great, but I won't spoil the surprise. Lets just say the ending is pretty lame.
As for the main affair, colon-P-colon-P-colon-P the Level, it turns out it is a custom boss. And that's what this hack appears to be -- a showcase for a custom boss and not much more. Nothing wrong with that, but it wasn't what I was expecting going into it.
Our friend 8P8P8P is very well made. He uses a cool mechanic that I've never seen before. He spawns adds that have to be killed for blocks, which is neat. He is very hard however, and I was getting more than a little frustrated while playing him. I still think he could have done just fine with three or five hits, but during editing I disagree with the extremity of the complaints I had when recording.
There's nothing wrong with this boss taking more than a few hits to complete. He has patterns, you can learn them, you can execute it just find without any RNG messing you up if you are good enough. And at the end of the day, there's a use for all challenge levels. Super Mario World ROM hacks go from creations that are easier than the original game to things that can't be done with anything less than a tool-assisted run, and this boss fits fine on that spectrum somewhere.
The reason this was never released back in the day was because I got frustrated and used save states. Normally I wouldn't do this on a hack video, but this wasn't a viewer submission so I cared a little less. After I was done I regretted it and decided not to upload it. However, since then, I've used save states in some Kaizo stuff, so I'm less concerned about having the occasional video where I have to cheat to get through it. Sorry for anyone that's disappointed though, I think the videos are much better when there's no cheating.
