【Illuminator ❚ Day 3】53 Days of Action 52 (Individual Videos For All Action 52 Games)
Welcome to Illuminator, Day 3 of 53 Days of Action 52. This is a game so bad that it spawns literally-unwinnable conditions. That has got to be the worst flaw of game design that exists.
The basis of this game is simple. You have five floors, enemies spawn on each floor, and you need to kill the enemies. Every time one dies, the lights go on for a few seconds. The rest of the time, you're fumbling around in darkness, perpetually confused if there is some way you can turn on the many lights overhead.
All things considered, the game is decent for Action 52 (which I realize doesn't say much, but still). It's an original concept that I haven't seen before, and that alone is what is carrying it really. The gameplay itself is moderately entertaining at best and frustrating at worst, but the concept is solid. I can't think of another game that uses this type of constant blackout method, so from a game design perspective it's at least interesting.
The controls are the same unpolished controls that seem to pollute the entire cartridge, although they aren't the worst in this game. The gameplay is easy to get into, but ultimately simple. It's the kind of thing that I feel would work better on an arcade machine, because it's built around that quarter-stealing mechanic and it's too simple to need to keep a copy at home to play all the time. The replayability bar is a little lower for a multicart, but what I'm saying is I don't see me busting out Illuminator for repeat sessions.
---[ Series Information ]---------------
53 Days of Action 52 is a series where I go through each of the games on the NES Action 52 cartridge in order, with the final episode being the legendary Cheetahmen. We'll give each game a 'First Impression' style review, with each episode lasting as long or short as the game warrants, and hopefully we will find a few that are good enough to make additional videos on.
