【Chester Cheetah: Too Cool to Fool】〖Squiggy's SNES First Level Quest〗(All SNES Games Level One)
Who's that hip cat straight from the 90's, with the cool shades and that totally radical edge? Well that's Chester Cheetah, and he's made it to the video game world, and let me tell you -- his game is terrible. It misses the mark in pretty much every way.
Right off the bat they give us some funny little Chester Cheetah storyline, which I actually enjoyed a lot. I just like the way he talks, its so ridiculous. Its an extreme over-the-top parody of the 90's. I was alive in the 90's and it's more 90's than anything I've ever seen.
But yeah, our first sign that this might not be a good game is that they don't even give us time to read the funky fresh text . Someone didn't take the time to QA this text box that's literally the first thing you see, so what does that say about the actual game?
The gameplay is some weird mixture of beat'm up and platformer. The way you walk around is a lot like a beat'mup , but it plays like a platformer. There's not many actual platformers, but jumping on enemies heads is more of a platformer thing than it is a beat'm up thing.
Its an interesting combination, but the execution is where it really falls apart. It might be a cool combo on paper (or not really, as far as combinations go that one is kind of boring anyways), but even if it's an okay concept, it just wasn't executed right. When it comes down to it, it's best explained as 'just not fun.'
The first problem is the speed. Why does this game move so slow? He's Chester Cheetah! Hes a flippin cheetah! Cheetahs are basically only known for one thing - being fast. I know hes a cool laid back cheetah with sunglasses, but he could get a hustle on every once in a while for the sake of a decent game.
Now for something that's good about the game -- the colour palette. It's funky and fun, it's really bright, its different than most others I've seen on the SNES, and it fits the world really well. It just look like where Chester Cheetah would live, with purple trees and other assorted radical plants everywhere.
its not very satisfying to play. The speed combined with jumping on enemies heads being the only way you can fight them, further combined with enemies not having the best hitboxes, makes it pretty rough. The hitboxes aren't the biggest problem for the record, but jumping on certain things (like the steamroller) felt a little off.
There's these little sewer parts that kind of stand out, if I'm really trying my hardest to find notable sections anyways. They kind of remind me of Bubsy but about 10x less fun. Basically all you do is squiggle your way through them on your tummy, and they might as well just be another platforming section that you can't jump in. Its like "Wow, you managed to take the platforming out of a platformer and leave just tummy wiggling." They're interesting visually, its a cool notable segment that breaks up the gameplay, but like everything else they're just not fun to play. its not bad, but its just not good.
The thing I found the most interesting was the Koopa hopping piece they put in the first level. Koopa hopping in Super Mario World is kind of an advanced tactic, so to see it in the first level of this game was surprising. It was decently hard in this game, similar to the difficulty of SMW. What I really liked about the way they did this is they had a sewer section underneath the koopa part that I didn't catch the first few times, but once I realized that it was hard to get across the lake, I started looking around and found it. I realized the sewers brought you underneath the Koopa hopping lake and let you skip it.
So, by giving me a hard challenge, which I at first thought was some Kaizo BS in Level 1, it forced me to explore. That was some good game design right there. Credit where credit is due.
So its not all bad. I can point out some good if you press me on it. The bad comes easier than the good, because the bad is just the general game experience that permeates everything else, but there is some good in there. You might just have to squint a little to see it.

Squiggy's SNES First Level Quest is a series where I attempt to beat the first level of every SNES game. Some will be chosen randomly, some chosen because I liked them when I was younger, and some chosen by viewer request. This isn't necessarily a review or first impression or anything - the only true goal is to first define "What is Level 1 in this game?" and then beat it.
