2016 Chevrolet Volt | Real World Review | Autotrader
When the Chevrolet Volt first came out for the 2011 model year, it made major waves. Now, the second-generation Chevrolet Volt is here with an all-new look and other key updates. We recently had the chance to spend some time driving the totally redesigned 2016 Chevrolet Volt.
To start, the Volt is offered in two trim levels: a well-equipped base-level LT and an upscale Premier. The Volt still offers an electric powertrain mated to a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, which work to put out some impressive numbers -- especially when it comes to range. Specifically, the redesigned Volt boasts 53 pure electric miles per gallon and a total range of 420 miles when you include the range-extending gasoline engine -- a big boost over the old model.
As for pricing, the latest Volt starts around $33,000, while a fully loaded model runs closer to $45,000 -- but both of those numbers are before the $7,500 federal tax credit, which helps make the Volt more affordable.
For a plug-in hybrid, the Volt is surprisingly quick thanks to improved power and torque curves for 2016. It handles well around corners, but it does feel a little heavy for a small vehicle. As for comfort, the latest Volt offers less wind and road noise than its predecessor, and it now boasts seating for five versus the outgoing model's four seats.
Inside, the 2016 Chevrolet Volt offers plenty of standard bells and whistles. We were surprised, however, by the lack of a power driver's seat considering the Volt's price. But if you're willing to upgrade, you can get features such as automatic park assist, a wireless charging pad, heated front and rear seats, and a Bose premium audio system.
Standard gadgets include a large full-color driver information center in the gauge cluster and a center control stack with an 8-inch color touchscreen. As for safety, we like the standard backup camera and pedestrian signal that alerts people when the car is cruising in quiet electric mode. Many advanced safety features, such as a blind spot monitoring system, lane-departure warning and forward-collision warning, are also available, though they're only offered with the Premier trim level.
The bottom line: With more power, more range and more features, the latest Volt is sure to be a game changer.
