2016 Subaru Legacy | 5 Reasons to Buy | Autotrader
The 2016 Subaru Legacy's predecessors were known for their reliable year-round performance, but little else, and sales success was hard to come by. So if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. The latest Legacy has a lot in common with best-selling family sedans, overlapping in both styling cues and feature content, but with its boxer engines and all-weather excellence, it still has enough character to satisfy Subaru loyalists. Here are five reasons why the 2016 Subaru Legacy deserves your full attention.
Standard All-Wheel Drive
There's a reason why the Northeast is full of Subarus: Every model comes standard with all-wheel drive, whereas other automakers make you pay extra. The Legacy continues this tradition, and it also comes standard with Active Torque Vectoring for more precise handling in all conditions. If you worry about slippery roads in your neck of the woods, this Subaru will give you serious peace of mind.
Impressive Fuel Economy
All-wheel drive requires more energy, so it's no surprise that fuel economy hasn't always been a Subaru strength. But the 4-cylinder Legacy gets 36 miles per gallon on the highway, putting it near the head of the midsize-sedan class. Even the 6-cylinder version gets 29 mpg hwy despite making 81 extra horsepower. We used to expect the worst from Subaru in this regard, but now the Legacy stands out as one of the most fuel-efficient cars.
Generous Standard Equipment
Family-sedan shoppers are always looking for a good value, and the Legacy certainly delivers. In fact, the base Legacy 2.5i comes so well-equipped that you don't really need anything more. Standard features include Bluetooth phone and audio, a USB port, smartphone connectivity and even a 6.2-inch touchscreen. Some rivals save the good stuff for expensive options packages or higher trim levels, but the Legacy gives you what you want right out of the box.
Big Back Seat
The Legacy has historically been one of the smaller family sedans on the market -- "midsize-minus" is how we used to think of it -- but this is no longer the case. The new model has lots of rear legroom and includes an unusually high rear bench that provides excellent thigh support -- a nice perk that doesn't show up in the technical measurements. If you have tall friends or family members, the Legacy is a great fit.
Luxurious Ride
Comfort was clearly a high priority for Subaru because the Legacy also has an unusually soft ride. You barely feel rough pavement in the cabin, and the overall effect is more luxury sedan than family sedan -- another perk that most folks don't expect from a Subaru. It's clear that this car is all about exceeding expectations.
