2016 Scion iM First Drive Review
87This 2016 Scion iM could be considered the replacement for the Matrix. It’s roughly the same size and it’s got five doors, but it’s so much better. Just look at it. That’s one of the reasons I like it. It looks amazing, like it's straight out of Tokyo.
The Scion iM is sold around the world in all sorts of variations and names under the Toyota name, but as a Scion, we only get the top spec model with a body kit, a lower suspension and 17 inch wheels.
Offered with a six speed manual like this one – it’s so good that you don’t want the optional CVT. There’s even automatic climate control, which I prefer. Just set it and forget it.
The iM has an independent rear suspension and the 1.8 litre, 137 horsepower engine. With the independent rear suspension, flashy body extensions and top spec trim, the 2016 Scion iM rolls over the scales at 1335 kg or 2943 lb, which is perhaps a little heavy for cars in this segment. It gets 37 miles per gallon highway and in the real world mileage is great too. I got 21 miles per gallon in mostly city driving and keep in mind that I drive like an idiot. For me that’s great mileage and you'll do far better than that. Trust me.
The 2016 Scion iM is a veritable bargain at just over $19,000 US or $21,000 Canadian. Your other options are perhaps things like a basic five-speed VW Golf which does have 170 hp or a top spec Honda Fit, but this is undoubtedly the best looking compact five door available.

Perhaps that’s what this Scion iM is. The best looking five door, but It really could because the chassis has so much potential, but needs some help in a sporting direction. I guess there’s always the aftermarket for that. More importantly, with 137 hp having to motivate 2900 pounds, it really could benefit from another fifty horsepower. All around, the 2016 Scion iM is a fun to drive five door that also happens to be an excellent value.
