32Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport Debuts LA Auto Show Script
For the first time since the nineties, Porsche is making available the first non-911-based, factory-built racing car. This car is the Cayman GT4 Clubsport.
While the roadgoing GT4 is a formidable performance car in its own right – capable of blistering acceleration and a top speed just shy of 300 kilometres per hour. Porsche developed the GT4 as a speed machine for hard core enthusiasts, but this GT4 Clubsport takes the Cayman game to an entirely new level. No, it’s not intended for Sunday drives on country roads – unless those country roads are a racing circuit.
Like its big brother the 911 GT3 Cup racer, the GT4 Clubsport is a track-ready racecar and includes a race-spec suspension, roll cage, racing seat, 12-way adjustable ABS, and a race-legal fuel cell. Unlike the GT4 road car, the Clubsport is fitted with a bespoke race-oriented PDK transmission only and its quick shifting gives it a competitive advantage in championships that allow multiple makes. Unlike Porsche’s other seven speed PDK boxes, this one is a six-speed.
The overall performance envelope places it one full rung down the racing ladder from the 911 GT3 Cup, giving Porsche racing enthusiasts an easier-to-drive and lower-cost entry point into racing.
In race trim, the GT4 makes 385 horsepower and crosses the scales at 1,300 kilos, about is 40 kilos lighter than the road car despite the addition of the safety roll cage and fuel cell.
The front suspension comes directly from the race-proven 911 GT3 Cup racer. The roll cage is welded into the chassis, and like the road car, it has a proper mechanical limited slip differential.
At US $165,000 (Canadian pricing to follow), it’s priced at about a Boxster less than the 911 GT3 Cup race car, but unlike the GT3 Cup, you can buy and take delivery of your GT4 from your local dealer.
