Sonic is very tricky. Seeing as brawler doesn't have a projectile, or if you use shotput, its slow, Sonic will mostly just camp. When you can finally get a hit on sonic you need to make sure you capitalize as much as you can on your advantage state.
I have recently learned though that FMP can be used to stop Sonic's spin dash. So instead of shielding and hope for the best, you have an option to force Sonic to do another option.
But, as always, use wisely. It's not a gamechanger, just a tool.

This video specifically, I was able to completely force the sonic player to stop spamming spindash by abusing it hard. I was so happy.
