I'm getting fancier and fancier with my SoX usage. Now I added a dynamic audio range compressor filter to make silent speech louder and loud speech quieter. That should considerably improve the intelligibility, as well as boost the overall sound volume without causing clipping. Pretty fancy. Also, I found out that I only need to apply 0.01 (1%) of noise reduction to make it work right, so the voice quality should be improved.
