3 Myths about Free & Open Source Software
Dispelling 3 myths & misconceptions about Free and Open Source software (FOSS).
Some of the best software available is released under open source licenses. Despite this, there are alot of myths about Free & Open Source Software that really ought to be dispelled.
1. Open Source Software is poorer quality than proprietary software.
Anecdotally perhaps, but possibly due to a lack of maintenance on older software because maintainers don't often have an obligation to keep software up to date. Also, there's simply _more_ OSS used on a daily basis so you are more likely to encounter a bug with OSS over closed source software.
2. Open Source developers are unpaid volunteers.
Some of the most popular Open Source applications, tools, and libraries are developed by companies that employ fulltime developers. Even the Linux kernel itself is developed by paid developers at top companies like RedHat, Intel, and Samsung.
3. You owe Open Source developers respect
Respect is earned, not entitled. Writing code for "free" and releasing it to the community should not come with a sense of entitlement or owed respect. Anyone can write code, but unfortunately many developers choose to write poor quality code and abstain from writing tests. This is not a practice that deserves respect.
