a little backstory: i had been playing both solo and with friends and kind of on a cold streak. was trying to unlock some shotgun ammo and just wasnt playing cautiously enough to main the shotgun, which, paradoxically, becomes more of a stealth gun in this game, whereas in other games, shotguns are generally brawling/rushing weapons. you really need to get the drop on people to use the shotgun effectively, and so you need others to move through your space without them knowing you are there.

to reset my brain, i started going back to the springfield, which is the cheapest primary rifle in the game and one which i feel really teaches you how to play the game correctly. it has decent range and power, but only one shot, so you have to be careful with it. as i was using it, i unlocked dum dum ammo, which is basically bleed ammo. stacking a bleed on top of high damage basically imposes a major time tax on anyone you hit, as they need to stop bleeding, and then heal twice to get back to a position where they can absorb another shot. at $38 for the rifle, and 25$ per half-stack of dum dum, you can achieve this setup for only $88 on your primary, which is very affordable.

the first 2 people i killed seemed pretty new, as they were tangled up with zombies but still should have heard me. but the second 2 people, by virtue of their equipment, were likely more seasoned. bottom line is, i walked in with the cheapest rifle in the game and walked out with the most expensive.

as an aside, i took the cavalry sabre because ive been struggling when pushing in with the shotgun and wanted to try something a little different. the sabre has good speed and reach, and is great for swatting zombies also.
