I had no clue about this character at all. Very few if any of the faqs about this game (and there are few to being with) even mention him. It was only after The Commentator brought him up to me that I even learnt of his existence. He becomes playable after winning five fights with Goku, when Goku will then change into it. Goku will remain as a Super Saiyan until Frieza is defeated in the arcade mode. It's actually really impressive in terms of programming; I've never seen anything like this before, and we'll certainly never see anything like this again.
Goku going Super Saiyan was of course probably the most pivotal moment in the whole of DBZ. Vegeta namedrops the concept of a super saiyan throughout most of the Frieza sagas. Finally, when Krillin is killed by Frieza (for what must have been like the fourth time in the franchise by that point), Goku then, in his overwhelming anguish, reaches the form of Super Saiyan and suddenly has the power to take down Frieza. Because deus ex machinas are such a great form of writing.
In the show, the concept of an SS takes forever to happen, and then quickly loses its steam as it gets overused. This isn't helped by the fact that after the Frieza sagas begins the Cells sagas, which are to this date some of the single most worthless excuses for "entertainment" in existence, but I'll probably talk about that a bit more when I get to Super Dragon Ball Z in the future. Needless to say, Mecha Frieza was one of the biggest bullshit moments I can think of in any piece of media in existence.
SS Goku as a hidden character was, at the very least, a nice touch and a good addition to the game. He actually has his own character value, which is quite interesting, and he's incredibly powerful compared to the regular characters, as you might hope, and even has his own unique winning animation where he blasts the opponent into smithereens. A basic, but good addition to the game on the whole.
