Gameplay of the final (actually final) boss form of Frieza in the arcade game Dragonball Z.

Oh boy, back to Dragonball. This game actually contains a boss and a hidden character, but I never realised this because this game has been so poorly documented. It wasn't until The Commentator, a long-time viewer who also informed me of Super Bison in Street Fighter The Movie, explained to me that the game contained a hidden Super Saiyan version of Goku that I bothered to go back and check the game again.

Frieza actually has two forms in this game, would you believe. Now, of course, Frieza has been mocked since his inception for an obsession with superfluous forms. He had four in the main show, ultimately culminating in his iconic fourth form you see here. However, he has two forms in this game, both related to his final form. So, how do you even denote that? 4 1/2 th form? 4 2/2 th form? I don't even know.

Anyhow, the reason for doing this was to include a bit of fanservice. Those who've watched the show will remember that, at one point, Frieza mocks Goku by refusing to fight with his arms, only using his tail and legs. His first form fights in this way. This makes him rather limited however in his abilities, so in the second round he gains considerably more power and a number of new abilities. This makes Frieza, I shit you not, the first two form boss in existence. Yes, before Rugal, before Krizalid, before Kain, he was the first. It's a bit jarring, to say the least. He's even a separate character value, and by hacking you can make sure you always play as second form Frieza.

On closer inspection, this game isn't as bad as I perceived it to be at first. It's really nothing special, but I can't deny there was a decent amount of effort put into it, which the inclusion of two forms for Frieza and Super Saiyan Goku helps to signify. It might also be the first game with destructable environments, with arenas becoming partially destroyed after certain attacks are used, and this adds to the fan service, for instance with Chiaotzu suddenly becoming visible in Goku's stage behind a broken wall. It's odd that an obvious cash-in such as this actually has a surprising amount of thought put into its design, but life is full of surprises I guess.
