Now we're in obscure territory. Only released in Japanese arcades and on the Saturn in Japan, Elan Doree is one of Sega's most forgotten titles. I only found out about it by looking up various lists of games per arcade platforms.
It's a unique title in which characters fight while riding dragons. Special moves are done in the typical quarter-circle motion, or by pressing a combination of buttons together. There are also bomb-type moves, similar to those seen in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, where characters are able to launch a powerful attack at any time, but can only do this twice per round.
The bosses of the game are the Black Knight and his second form, the Kaiser Dragon. What is it with kaiser dragons in Japanese games? There was supposed to be a Kaiser Dragon in FFVI as well.
The Kaiser Dragon is extremely powerful. Has a beam attack that can drain all of your attack meter and then break through your defences, dealing even more damage, or at least leaving you vulnerable for some follow up moves. He also has some powerful crowd control style attacks where he surrounds himself with fireballs, as well as a few hard-hitting combos. He's a nuisance all around, and you will probably die to him quite a lot. I know I did, as I actually had to manually unlock the bosses in this game. I've complained about it before, but the STV board has some of the most batshit nonsense coding in existence, with character values being more or less impossible to derive for certain games. This is one of those games.
So, in terms of raw power, the Kaiser Dragon is a total beast. He is, however, rather slow on the whole, and the quicker characters are usually able to defeat him pretty quickly if they get in close and prevent his attacks from starting. All in all, I think he makes for a pretty good boss on the whole, especially for a fighting game as oblique and unique as this.
