In this video, I take a deep dive into the Minisforum UM270 Mini PC to see how it holds up today. The Ryzen 7 2700U was a groundbreaking APU in its time, combining a quad-core CPU with Vega 10 integrated graphics. But how does it perform in 2025? Spoiler alert: the results are a mixed bag. While the CPU performance is surprisingly decent compared to some of todayβs low-end chips, the 11W TDP limit severely hampers its gaming capabilities.
I saw that Minisforum had a 30 dollar coupon on a couple of models on their refurbished store. I saw that it applied to their UM270 Mini PC that barebones, sold for around 100 USD. So with the coupon, I managed to snag it for 75 dollars after tax. The specs were interesting at least for testing reasons. It comes with the now almost ancient Ryzen 7 2700U APU released all the way back in 2017. Thats right, an 8 year old chip. I was excited to take a look at this system as it almost feels like a part of history. It gives a good insight on how the APU and Mini PC market has evolved over the years. I remember my excitement at the prospect of these new Ryzen APUs after being a fan of AMDs APUs going back to the early 2010s. So while it serves as a monument of just how old I'm getting, it also was an interesting retrospective. The performance of this system in some ways impressed me and in many many many others disappointing me greatly. the biggest disappointment was the 11W TDP that this system seems to be stuck at. The gaming performance was sometimes laughably bad, but the CPU performance isn't all that awful in comparison to the lowest end chips of today. Whether thats a sign of how revolutionary ryzen was, or more of a condemnation of the current market of low end chips is really up to personal interpretation.
