It's well known that Jesus often taught in parables - short stories that pointed to a specific truth, to something wise and worth reflecting on. In Matthew 13, Jesus tells a handful of parables, but these parables, as often is the case, aren't just tiny vignettes like the occasional "sermon illustration". These are shared in a specific order, for a specific reason and with a specific goal in mind. They're taking the crowd and Jesus' disciples on a journey, intending to lead to one of most critical aspects of his message and mission.
