#918 SoulCalibur III (PS2) Bosses (2/3): Colossus playthrough.
A playthrough of the bonus boss Night Terror in the PS2 port of Namco’s SoulCalibur III.
I think I’ve fulfilled my daily weirdness quota for a lifetime by this point. Colossus is one of the strangest inclusions I have ever seen, both in this series and in any series. He’s giant. Enormous. He’s a big guy, but not for you and me because like Night Terror he too isn’t playable. For good reason though.
Only fought in the mission mode of the game, Colossus is intended to be a bonus boss. He’s an optional, albeit insane fight where the majority of his moves take off between 30 to 60(!!!!!) percent of your health. Admittedly, he is very slow, and most of his moves can be blocked, but he’s still a force to be reckoned with. Did I mention that he’s giant? I’m actually genuinely impressed that he doesn’t cause any glitches in regards to the stage, it’s really impressive programming. Actually, his mere existence is incredibly impressive as programming goes, as in most other series trying to access a character like this would probably just crash the game, or at least just make it incredibly glitchy.
So, Colossus only has a few moves. He doesn’t really need any more though. His A attack is a powerful laser attack (which doesn’t have much charge-up time, meaning that he can use it again while you’re on the ground), his f+A attack is a charged kick which deals decent damage, his regular K attack stomps and his f+K attack flicks the opponent away with his foot, and then there’s his B attack. His B attack is so hilariously broken, I just sort of adore it. He charges up, and then smashes his shield onto the ground, dealing 50% or more to the opponent all at once. But that’s not all. He also sends the opponent flying towards the edge of the arena as well. And some arenas are really small…which means that, as you see here, using his B attack at the beginning of the round in a small arena will cause the opponent to fly up into air and out of the ring two seconds after the match begins. But that’s not the most broken thing about Colossus, either.
Colossus is never intended to be fought in more than one round. As a result, after he is defeated, the game doesn’t have the ability to make him useable again. What does that mean? Well, as you can see in this video…if Colossus is defeated in a two-round fight, the opponent will instantly lose the next two rounds as Colossus will fall on top of them and kill them instantly before the next round can begin. HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHHAHAHA. It’s one of the most cheesy, hilarious, broken things in existence, and I love it. This means that, yes, in a two-round match Colossus can instantly win BY DOING NOTHING AT ALL. Wow great “design” you got there Namco, Jesus Christ. I told you this game was batshit insane.
Colossus is a hell of a lot of fun to play as, but admittedly he is extremely limited as a character, with only a few moves and technically being very vulnerable to character circling around him and attacking him from behind. That said, he’s such a unique and weird experience that I had an absolute blast playing as him; like my Night Terror video this is definitely one of the most enjoyable recordings I have ever done. I have such a love/hate thing with this game it’s unbelievable, goddamn.
Next up, the vanilla boss of this game. Once you’ve been to space, it’s all downhill from there.
