#920 SoulCalibur III (PS2) Hidden Characters (1/6): Cervantes playthrough.
A playthrough of the hidden character Cervantes de Leon in the PS2 port of Namco’s SoulCalibur III/ Soul Calibur 3.
Sure, Abyss was a hidden character, but now we move onto the true hidden characters. As with Weapon Master mode in the previous game, hidden characters are unlocked by defeating them in the de facto story mode of the game, so this time in Tales of Souls mode. As I’ve said before, this mode is reminiscent of a wrestling game story mode more than anything else, with different victories, losses and choices all leading to potentially different fights, and these different fights occasionally including hidden characters who become unlocked after they are defeated.
The former boss Cervantes returns once more and…well, he’s not too much different from before. I chose his Soul Edge as his weapon for this playthrough, which was probably a mistake in hindsight as while it does seem to deal increased damage, it also seems to make him take more damage and definitely drains his health slowly. This is not helped by the fact that Cervantes seems kind of slow here compared to previous games (getting on in his years I guess, if that’s even possible for a demonic being), and as I’ve said before speed is more or less king when it comes to SoulCalibur. Unless you’re Night Terror, then you just blast them with lasers.
Cervantes was a good choice for a hidden character as always, but the novelty of his reformed moveset has definitely worn off a little bit by this point. Still, I always like it when he returns in a title, as it shows to me at least that Namco hasn’t forgotten their roots, what little comfort that might actually be.
Next up, another returning hidden character from SoulCalibur II.
