#921 SoulCalibur III (PS2) Hidden Characters (2/6): Sophitia playthrough.
A playthrough of the hidden character Sophitia in the PS2 port of Namco’s SoulCalibur III/ Soul Calibur 3.
A couple of days ago, I reached 1800 subscribers. Goddamn; another 100 in just over a month. A huge thanks both to all the newer people watching, as well as the those who've been watching for absolutely ages now. I'll have to start thinking of something to do when I (hopefully) reach 2000 subs.
I bitched about this in my SCII Sophitia video as well, but replacing Sophitia with her sister felt really cheap to me. Like, really really cheap. This was a character who was in the first two games but then unceremoniously replaced by her own sibling for some reason come SoulCalibur 2. It just feels unnecessary to me, and while it doesn’t reek of desperation or anything it does say to me that they really never had a clue what they were doing with this series, and that it was actually the experimental one they were able to mess around with. Hell, at least this game actually is experimental. More on that when I get to IV and V.
You’ll also notice that she’s wearing white silk and has a wreath in her hair. Yeah, she’s based on typical depictions of the Greek Goddess Athena, which of course shows that at least someone in Namco knew the difference between what an Angel “looks like” and what Athena “looks like”. So why did Angel in Tekken always ended up looking like Athena if they did knoew the difference? Cultural misunderstanding, maybe? It’s curious.
As for Sophitia, well, she’s one of the best fighters in the series, unlike SCII where I felt she was a bit lacking. Spam, spam, spam, spam, eggs, bacon and spam. That’s sophitia in a nutshell. Nearly all of her attacks come out quickly, hit hard, combo easily, and goddamn is she just insanely competent as a character. She was actually a character added to the console ports of SoulCalibur II, which might explain why I couldn’t really take to her there, but now she’s absolutely on top of her game again. Used to be the bane of my existence back when I played SCIV online. As you’ll see in this video, her Soul Calibur is insane, considerably upping her defence and her health as well as her attack, making her easily one of the deadliest characters in the game. One explanation as to why she’s hidden, maybe.
