#925 SoulCalibur III (PS2) Hidden Characters (6/6): Olcadan playthrough.
A playthrough of the hidden character Olcadan in the PS2 port of Namco’s SoulCalibur III/ Soul Calibur 3.
Bird is the word I guess, as I get the “pleasure” of covering brand new character Olcadan, in his single instance in the entire series. Yeah, just like Necrid he’s one of “those” characters, which Namco seems to want to forget instantly after creating them.
Olcadan is the token roulette character of the game. For some reason, Namco had an obsession with changing the roulette character from game to game, a strange choice which still somewhat baffles me. Before of course, there was Edge Master in SoulCalibur I and Charade in SoulCalibur II, as well as Inferno being a roulette character boss in both of those game. Now, instead of being a sort-of playable version of the boss, the roulette character seems to exist more for comical and tokenistic reasons than anything else, which might explain why one didn’t return for SoulCalibur IV. Doesn’t explain why there were three in SCV though.
Olcadan’s backstory is hilarious. He was cursed by some God to have the head of an owl. That’s it. So now he’s this weird-looking Owl-man-thing. He even has an alternate costume where you see him pre-transformation. A nutty, mostly comic relief character who is understandably forgotten by Namco, and probably also most fans of the series.
It’s always weird looking at these somewhat forgotten novelty characters. It’s like those times I remember Necrid being in SoulCalibur II, it’s a baffling realisation. Experiments characterise this series in general, as I’ve said many times before. Indeed, Olcadan’s inclusion is particularly baffling, as next time we see the return of a certain former roulette character. And so, the weirdness of this game begins once again. As if it ever really ended.
