A playthrough of the Star Wars guest character Yoda in the Xbox 360 version of Namco’s SoulCalibur IV/ Soul Calibur 4.

“We’ve seen him, but we’ve never actually seen him fight. This’ll be the first time we see him pull out that little laser-sword of his and go to town.” – George Lucas.

Nothing quite says “we have no idea what we’re doing” like paying homage to the worst Star Wars film of them all. [As you can tell from that line, I wrote this description before the release of The Last Jedi.] Yoda isn’t even in The Force Unleashed, and like Gon in Tekken 3 can’t even be hit by high attacks, making his inclusion in this game extremely baffling. I guess it’s because he’s the symbol of good in the Star Wars universe and one of its more obviously iconic characters, but it’s still a bizarre move on the whole. They could have included Obi-Wan or Luke if they needed to have a light-side character, or even just scrap that and include The Emperor or Darth Maul instead. Oh man, what could have been. These guest characters were terrible ideas but goddamn would I forgive them some if they would have just given me a playable Darth Maul. But nope, we got stuck with yet another character effectively ruined by the Prequels. His fight with Sheev “The Senate” Palpatine in Episode 3 was pretty good though, I can’t deny that. Every cloud a silver lining.

Yoda’s fighting style here is just bizarre. Most of his regular attacks will actually cause him to jump around to fight, although his low attacks will keep him on the ground, and have the added bonus of often being able to launch the opponent. It’s not like it matters anyway however, as Yoda is as spammy as they come. You see, Yoda doesn’t really have any innate force moves, with the exception of a force parry attack. That’s right. The master of the force, the embodiment of that great, iconically existentialist element which typified Star Wars (and one of its biggest inspirations from Kurosawa’s films), the character who helped to bring an extra layer of depth to the very being of Star Wars, who helped to typify the extent to which Star Wars could be. That guy, who showed that power came not from strength but from spirit and belief, and the embrace of the two, that guy, THAT GUY, doesn’t have any regular force moves. What does he have? Oh, he is spam city. Did you like Attack of the Clones? No? Well tough shit, because AotC Yoda is what’s on the menu. Did you enjoy seeing acting legend Christopher Lee swing about a stick at an imaginary green rodent? Well, if you did, then you can relive that awkward, hilarious moment, and it’s all thanks to Namco.

You see, Yoda’s regular moves are a bit limited. He has a nice charging horizontal attack (f+B) in which he lunges forth with a low attack (and usually breaks the guard of the opponent in the process), and he has a good launching uppercut slash attack (df+B, B) which works pretty well. He’s the thing though. Yoda can cancel during his aerial attacks, into further attacks. Most of his attacks are aerial attacks. And these move cancels don’t cause very much force meter to use. Put that all together and add his ultimate weapon, and…you have one of the easiest characters to spam with in the entire series. The entire bloody series. The embodiment of the force is the one to spam you to death with cheap, easy to cancel-combo lightsaber strikes. Of course, this means that Yoda’s a bloody monster, and practically breaks the game in many ways because, of course, he can’t even be hit by horizontal attacks. What a bizarre, bizarre choice. He’s not even that fun to play as truth be told; every combo of his boils down to aerial attack, cancel attack, follow-up attack. It’s so, so silly, and I was pretty glad to be done with this embarrassing inclusion to this title.

Next up, the last guest character to cover, and the final video on SoulCalibur IV
