스토리
'결승전 직후 불의의 사고와 함께 막을 내린 'KOF 96' 대회. 그 사고는 어떤 이의 테러 활동과 그에 따른 사고라고 발표되었으나 어떤 이가 "누구"이고 또 무엇을 위해 그런 일을 했는지, 그리고 그 누군가는 어디로 사라졌는지 등은 수수께끼로 남았다.
이러한 사건에도 불구하고 「KOF'96」 대회 자체는 상업적으로는 대성공을 거두었다. 그런 격투 대회 붐을 타고, 이에 흥미를 표한 몇몇 거대 기업이 스폰서를 자청해 「KOF'97」대회 개최의 뜻을 보였다. 이미 세계 각지에서 열망하고 있던 터라 「KOF'97」 대회 개최는 순조롭게 진행되었다.
대회 개최 결정과 동시에 세계의 격투가들도 각 예선 대회장에 모여, 어떤 사람은 「자신의 힘을 시험하기 위해」, 또 어떤 사람은 「부와 명성을 위해」 여러 가지 생각을 가슴에 품고 예선 대회에 임한다.
다양한 미디어를 통해 치열한 예선 대회를 관람하는 격투 팬들. 그 예선 대회가 열리는 동시에 세계 각지에 KOF 격투장이 차례차례로 설치되어 갔다. 「KOF'97」 대회에 모아지는 기대는 평범한 수준이 아니어서 작년 대회 못지않게 분위기가 고조되어 있다는 것은 확실했다.
전 세계가 기대하는 이 대회에 우승해 「KOF」의 영광을 거머쥐는 팀은 어느 쪽이 될지. 또 작년 대회같은 예기치 못한 사고가 올해도 발생하는 것은 아닐지. 온 세계가 이 대회에 집중하고 있었다.
시스템
전작의 생소한 회피 시스템을 보완함과 동시에 기존의 회피 시스템을 다시 채용한 두 가지 방식을 사용했다. 전자를 어드밴스드 모드, 후자를 엑스트라 모드라 하며 그 차이점은 다음과 같다.
•어드밴스드 모드
◦기본 베이스는 96이다.
◦체력 게이지가 주황색이며, 체력이 깎일 때엔 초록색으로 깎인다.
◦96부터 도입된 소 점프, 잔상 소점프, 일반 점프, 대 점프를 모두 사용할 수 있다.
◦96처럼 굴러서 피하는 전/후방 구르기를 사용한다. 96보다 회피판정이 강화되어 구르기가 끝나기 직전까지는 타격기에 무적 판정이지만, 구르기가 종료되는 시점에 약간의 딜레이와 함께 무방비 상태가 된다. 그리고 잡기에는 여전히 얄짤없다. 그리고 이번작부터는 그냥 AB로 전방 구르기를 시전하며, 후방 구르기는 ←+AB로 입력해줘야 한다. 이번 시리즈부터, 대시 중에 전방 구르기를 하면 구르는 거리가 늘어나며 이는 99, 2000을 제외한 모든 시리즈에 그대로 적용된다.
◦→→로 대시를 시전한다. 전작의 뒤로 대시는 버그라서 당연히 삭제.
◦게이지 시스템이 엄청 바뀌었다. 기를 직접 모으지 못하고 공격하거나 상대의 공격에 대한 방어를 하는 것으로 획득하며, 기 게이지 1개를 소비하여 MAX 상태가 아니라도 바로 초필살기를 시전할 수 있다. 게이지의 스톡은 최대 3개까지 모을 수 있고, 모아둔 기 게이지 자체에는 유효 제한 시간이 없다. MAX 초필살기를 사용하려면 ABC를 입력해 기 게이지를 1개 소비하여 파워 업을 한 후, 파워 업 유효 제한 시간 내에 다시 기 게이지 1개를 소비하여 초필살기를 사용하면 된다. 파워 MAX 상태는 지정된 시간이 종료되었을 때 사라지며, MAX 초필살기를 사용한 후에도 지속된다. 파워 MAX 시에는 공격력이 1.25배 증가한다.
•엑스트라 모드
◦기본 베이스는 94이다.
◦기존과 마찬가지로 체력 게이지는 노란색이며, 체력이 깎일 때엔 빨간색으로 깎인다.
◦점프는 일반 점프와 대점프만 존재한다. 대점프 입력법은 95와 동일하다.
◦94처럼 제자리에서 회피. 94가 베이스이기 때문에 카운터 공격은 없다.
◦→→로 스텝을 시전한다. 다만, 여전히 공중 특수기, 필살기, 초필살기는 사용할 수 없다.
◦기본 잡기를 풀 수 없다.
◦96처럼 ABC를 눌러서 직접 기를 모아야 한다. 직접 공격을 하여 기를 채우는 것은 불가능하나, 상대의 공격에 대한 방어를 하는 것으로 기를 채우는 것은 가능하다. 최대 1개까지 모을 수 있으며, 모으면 자동적으로 MAX 상태에 돌입하고 이때 초필살기를 쓸 수 있다. MAX 상태, 즉, 초필살기를 사용할 수 있는 상태가 어드밴스드의 기 게이지와는 달리 유효 제한 시간이 있다.
The King of Fighters '97
The King of Fighters '97 is the fourth game in The King of Fighters series. It's also the final chapter of the story arc "OROCHI SAGA". This King of Fighters has the introduction of two special modes: Advance Mode with a stock-based power meter along with running and rolling (based on KOF '96) and Extra Mode with the classic charge-based meter in tandem with sidestepping and quick-step-dashing (based on KOF '94 & '95).
This game was released on Arcade, Neo Geo, PlayStation, Sega Saturn and Neo Geo CD. This game was also released on iOS and Android in November 14, 2013. Fans were asked to vote for their favorite characters to add into the series through three game magazines: Famitsu, Gamest and Neo Geo Freak. The three winners form the '97 Special Team. The magazines also created their own special edit teams to include in the game.
A new version, called Global Match, was released for PlayStation Network (PS4/Vita) and for PC (Steam) in April 3, 2018.
Story
The official story given by SNK is as follows:
"KOF '96 tournament drew to a close with an incident that occurred right after the tournament's end."
The incident itself and the subsequent accident it caused were officially reported as the result of terrorist activity by an unknown group, but the details concerning the identity, motives, and subsequent whereabouts of the terrorists remained a mystery.
In spite of this incident, however, the KOF '96 tournament was an overwhelming commercial success. A few months after, the event triggered a fighting craze and various large corporations, expressing interest in the fad, offered to sponsor subsequent tournaments, leading to a demand for an eagerly awaited KOF '97. The fad reached all over the globe and in no time KOF '97 came into being.
With the decision to hold the tournament, fighters began to gather at various venues for the preliminary matches and approached the tournament with various motives, some came to test their abilities while others entered for wealth and fame. Word of the tournament came through all forms of the media, and fans from far and wide gathered to witness the white-hot preliminary battles. Concomitant to the preliminary matches, came the construction of various KOF stadiums throughout the world. Naturally the anticipation for the KOF '97 tournament exceeded historical precedent and it soon became obvious to everyone that the current tournament, as with the previous one, would reach a remarkable climax.
What team will win the tournament that the eyes of the whole world will look on and wear the KOF crown of victory? And does an incident similar to the unexpected accident of last year's tournament threaten to mar the festivities? All of the world's attention is focused on this year's tournament. KOF '97 is here!"
