The 9th/12th Royal Lancers are currently in Afghanistan, attached to 7th Armoured Brigade, the famous Desert Rats. A Squadron are based in the centre of the town of Gereshk, co-located with the Afghan National Army, the ANA. Together, they provide security to the main routes, covering over 200 kilometres of roads and surrounding area. Recently they conducted Operation Tufaan Baqy, a patrol into the little-known village of Kambarak, searching out Taliban safe-havens. The 9th/12th Lancers are formation recce, they operate in advance of the frontline, gathering information and intelligence on the enemy and the environment. Their role is to bring security to the main routes, around 200 km of road.
