In this video I give a brief history of rockets from 1200 a.d. when black powder rockets were invented, to 1966 a.d. I stop at 1966 because I wanted to limit the number of Mun missions required for this video, and I also assume (perhaps over-hopefully) that most people know of the astounding events of 1968 (first spacecraft to enter Lunar orbit, Apollo 8) and after. I wanted to focus on events prior to that, which to me are some of the most exciting events of the entire history of space but which probably don't get the exposure they deserve.
My first attempt to upload this video resulted in it dropping my intertitles. Hopefully this time will work better. If the intertitles drop out again, I may have to just leave it. The basic jist is, Chinese invent black powder rockets in the 13th Century, Indians use iron-cased rockets against the British in the 1700's which leads to an increased interest in military rockets in the West, Goddard creates the first liquid fueled rocket in the 1920's, Von Braun creates the V-2, but due to the excellence of British intelligence and their double agents, most of the ones intended for London in fact fall on Kent. Korolev creates the R-7 Semyorka intercontinental ballistic missile and launches Sputnik 1, the first satellite, and Vostok 1, which sends Yuri Gagarin, the first man into space. America follows shortly thereafter with the suborbital flight of Alan Shepard. America achieves the first manned rendezvous in space with Gemini's 6 and 7, and Luna 9 is the first spacecraft to soft-land on another celestial body.
A side note, while I poke fun at Alan Shepard having to pee his britches because of the long launch delays on his Mercury Redstone flight, many people are unaware that he also did the most precise landing of the entire Apollo program when he landed Apollo 14 in the Fra Mauro Highlands on the Moon. He had been grounded from 1964 to 1968 due to Ménière's disease, a disease of the inner ear. He underwent successful treatment through a new (at the time) surgical procedure, and was bumped up to the Apollo 14 mission due to some misbehavior on the part of Gordo Cooper, who was previously due to fly the mission. Shepard was originally scheduled for Apollo 13 but was bumped back to 14 to allow Shepard more time to train, as he had been grounded for 4 years.

I encourage you to revel in this extremely exciting part of human history!
