A Classy Time with Bulletstorm - 21 - Act 7 Chapter 2: I Don't Hold You Accountable (2 of 2)
People Can Fly did the PC port of the first Gears of War, you know. Towards the end there's a nice arena fight against a brumak (which is basically a giant alien ape that's used a tank), which they added for the port. They also did some work on Gears of War 2, which put you up against an even bigger boss at its end. Ditto for Gears of War: Judgement, and I'm not even going to start on Painkiller. People Can Fly is really good at making giant bosses, is what I'm getting at, and having People Can Fly work on something without there being a giant final boss is kind of a waste. It's entirely possible to have a climax without one, though, and I guess what happens here works well enough.
All told, Bulletstorm is still FUCKING FANTASTIC. Like I said, they took a single core mechanic, built everything around it, and refined it until it ran like clockwork. This game is well-designed (and has some snappy dialogue), takes design cues from both old and new games and still manages to be its own animal and play differently from either, and it wasn't until I wrote this that I got all sad because we're never going to see a sequel or anything like it again, because that slide would pretty much make every game better. You know what happens when you give that slide to Gears of War? You get Vanquish. QED.
