Red Dead Redemption… what better way to end season 2, of A Gamer Who Almost Missed, than with a story of where it all began? 11 months, 20 games, 46 videos later, I’ve finally come full circle with John Marston’s story.

Which brings up the question “can you really out run your past?”

The year is 1911, the ways of the old west are dying, John Marston, a known outlaw or hero to some, is forced to hunt down members of his old gang, Bill, Javier and the and only; Dutch van der Linde… but before we get into the rest of the story, let’s start with some of the things I didn’t like.

Things I didn’t like: a long story and unless favors.

Honestly, there wasn’t much I didn’t like about this game, the story felt really long and doing favor after favor to finally get one thing done made it feel even longer, don’t get me wrong, it was still a lot of fun and still a really great story but, there were times that it felt like it dragged, especially having to come back to certain missions at certain times, riding back and forth and back and forth got old really quick.

With almost 13 years of glory, this game has definitely withstood the test of time, the landscapes, day or night was absolutely beautiful and of course, the voice acting was incredible.

John Marston is a great character, but for some reason, I didn’t feel the same connection I had with Arthur Morgan and honestly, that’s my fault for playing them in the wrong order, or right order? I don’t know what order it’s supposed to played in. I think one of things that help me connect with Arthur so much was the being able to choose how a mission went or what he would say, in this game you just had to watch a cutscene and couldn’t really interact with other characters or the NPC’s which isn’t a big deal.

I set my expectations too high for this game, now it wasn’t disappointing and I’m not sure what I expected, I didn’t do as much exploring as I wanted to, because I was more interested in seeing what would happen with John’s story and how it would end, seeing him get pulled back into a world he desperately wanted to leave behind, left me with that unanswered question… can you really outrun your past? If you ask John, I’d like to think he’d say “I tried… in the end… I did.” He gave it all he had.

And if you asked Edgar Ross… he’d probably give you a different answer.

There’s nothing I can say about Red Dead Redemption that hasn’t already been said, I can’t imagine how much of a mystery John’s past must’ve been back in 2010, this game is definitely worth playing and is definitely a classic, with all that being said and not that it matters so much, my honest rating for Red Dead Redemption is a 7/10. John Marston is a legend, a badass and the complete opposite of what Micah, Arthur and Abagail said about him in Red Dead Redemption 2 and I’m having a hard time justifying that rating, all I can say is that the story was longer than I expected and I didn’t connect with John as much as I thought I would, but finally seeing his story after all these years was definitely worth it… but… for now Modern Warfare 2, and Earth2 review….
