Defenders of common descent (the theory that says all life is related through common ancestry) look to nested hierarchies as evidence for their viewpoint. Does the existence of a general nested hierarchy in the biological world provide undeniable evidence that all life is related - including whales and banana plants?
Nested hierarchies do not provide discriminatory evidence for evolution. This line of evidence is largely agnostic to the overall ancestry debate. Yes, there is a general hierarchy found in the biological order. Can only the evolutionary model explain this observation? The answer is no. The creation model also expects a general order to the biological world. Humans have to be more similar to one creature (chimpanzees) than to another one (whales). This is akin to how one vehicle will be more similar to some vehicles than to others. There exists both similarity and dissimilarity in the design world. For example, sedans are more similar to hatchbacks than they are to vans or boats. Humans design in hierarchical patterns. Why shouldn't God?
The problem for the evolutionary model is when you begin to look at all the discrepancies or inconsistences in the so-called nested hierarchy of life. An important point to consider is that the differences are what make all the difference. The differences are what provide this ongoing controversy with differentiating (or discriminatory) evidence. A few examples of incongruencies in what the evolutionary community calls an expected pattern include orphan genes, Y chromosome dissimilarity between humans and the great apes, and convergent evolution.
Orphan genes are taxonomically restricted (and essential) genes that lack no consistent hierarchy. These incredibly designed functional genes have no convincing evidence for having evolved. Where are the precursor genes that these interesting DNA elements have evolved from? This is why they are called orphan genes. They are observed in the genomes of living organisms with no good explanation for where the have originated from. The appear suddenly - which is exactly what a Biblical creationist would expect to find if special creation were true.
It turns out that when you consider overall gene content, size differences, and architecture, the human Y chromosome is only about 35-40% the same as the chimpanzee Y chromosome. As a matter of fact, when you bring in the gorilla Y chromosome, the gorilla Y is more similar to the human Y than either are to the chimpanzee Y. This is yet another major inconsistency in the evolutionary nested hierarchy. This was not predicted by the evolutionary community. And the differences are for to significant to be accounted for by the common descent model. The separate ancestry position best explains this data.
Convergent evolution is the so-called evolution or acquisition of similar features and traits in independent lineages. Rather than homologous features, these are referred to as analogous characteristics. The reality is that any time convergent evolution is invoked to explain similar features in independent lineages, the guardian of evolutionism is actually admitting to a lack of uniqueness in the universal phylogenetic tree. Creatures that evolutionists admit are very distantly related but yet share very similar features (dolphins, sharks, ichthyosaur) are actually amazing evidence for separate ancestry. These features did not evolve independently through mutations and natural selection over lots of time. They didn't evolve at all. These creatures exist independently from each other. They are not related at all.
In summary, general hierarchy to the biological world is expected by the creation model. But when the numerous inconsistencies are considered, only the separate ancestry model can account for the data.
