Were Adam and Eve real people? The answer is yes. And this is based on not only Biblical evidence but also scientific data. Adam and Eve really did exist. They were our first parents and the first couple.
We have discovered Adam (the first man) and Eve (the mother of all living) in the genomes of human beings. Let's start with Adam. The Y chromosome in humans worldwide has very little genetic variation. The Y chromosome is the male inherited DNA compartment. If you are a male, you got your Y chromosome from you father, and he got his Y chromosome from his father. Again, there is very little diversity seen in Y chromosomes around the world. The 2 people who are the farthest apart genetically are still only a couple hundred mutations different. This can easily be explained in the Biblical time frame. From Noah (4500 years ago) to today gives us more than enough time to accumulate a couple hundred mutations. This is especially true in light of the known mutation rate in the Y chromosome. The mutation rate is fast (much faster than the evolutionary community has ever predicted).
The last Y chromosomal ancestor of all men on the planet today is Noah (Y chromosome Noah). He has been discovered directly in the genetics of human beings (specifically males). To reiterate, we only find 1 male Y chromosome. Every single male Y chromosome on the planet is nearly identical and has been traced back to our last Y chromosome ancestor—Noah. The rate at which fathers pass on genetic mistakes (copying errors in DNA) to their children is fast (roughly 1-3 per generation). Fast mutation rates are not consistent with an origin of humans going back 100s of thousands of years.
The fact that there exists only 1 Y chromosome did not have to be true in the evolutionary model. The only way to explain a Y chromosome that mutates fast and has very low genetic variation is by the Young Earth Creation model. This data demonstrates compellingly that the Y chromosome is young.
The same thing is true for mitochondrial DNA (powerhouse of the cell). This is also uni-parentally inherited DNA. Mitochondrial DNA is passed down on the mother's side. And it turns out there is also very little genetic variation in this small chromosome. The mutation rate is high (roughly 0.1-0.5 per generation). With little variation (approximately 25 DNA differences between people and a maximum of about 140) and a fast mutation rate, a last mitochondrial DNA ancestor (Eve) can be traced back to just thousands of years ago. There are only a couple hundred generations worth of mutations accumulated in the mitochondrial genome. This is trivial. This is Biblical time.
