A Roguelite Tower Defense I Don’t Despise! – Necrosmith 2 Demo –
Necrosmith 2 is an Indie, 2D, Real Time with Pause, Exploration focused Roguelite Tower Defense game, with a bit of Horde Survival / Vampire Survivors baked in, and it’s actually good!
An Exploration focused Tower Defense game?
Yes.
I don’t much like Tower Defense games, as I find they have a strong tendency of being far too simplistic, passive, and outright linear for my liking, yet that is not the case with Necrosmith 2!
In Necrosmith 2, you have Random Maps, made with Procedural Generation, to help insure each run feels fresh, with different locations for the loot, like graves for more minion parts, chests of gold, and mana, resource generating buildings, and monster spawners, which each day, send out waves of foes to attack your tower!
You use the gathered mana for monster reanimation, with different parts costing more, so get your necro on!
There are portals on the map to find too; a bit like in Heroes of Might and Magic, only here, they let you deploy a reanimated undead directly from them, as opposed to releasing them at the tower; serving as a handy means of forward deploying your undead band!
Auto Attacking Undead You Can Control!
You can choose the undead minions you make, literally selecting each part from the piles gathered by your loyal minions, which have different strengths, weaknesses, and costs, so there is real choice and difference to each decision.
Do you focus on cheap, fast units for exploration, or stronger, slower ones to help handle any trouble on the way?
Think armor vs. speed, magical vs. physical damage, higher hp vs. passive regeneration, as your dead units are undead, and do not heal normally, unless a part includes that ability.
You also set 1 of 5 default orders for each reanimated monster: Defend the Tower, Attack enemies, Protect an area around them, Explore and Collect Resources, or attack enemy Dwellings.
These orders can be changed later if you wish, or as the situation demands, and you can even directly control one of them if you wish, turning the game into a bit of a Horde Survival / Vampire Survivors like.
Your minions seize buildings as they auto explore, adding the resources of the structure to your income each night, while during the day, the forces of well, not you, surge forth and try to take out your big, bad necromancer self!
Remember: if your tower is destroyed; you lose, so don’t lose!
You can also create a full on Titan, a titanic undead monstrosity with which to terrorize your many foes; fun, but it costs many resources, so better save up!
You can also find upgrade blueprints for the tower for the current run after taking locations on the map; granting bonuses depending on what it is: think much cheaper bone units, or other impactful unit modifiers, like the crypt: providing 2 skeleton or zombie parts at nightfall; nice, for a necromancer.
Meta Progression:
As a Roguelite, Necrosmith 2 has significant Meta Progression made between runs.
Each run, you collect coins, which are used between the runs to unlock new machines for your tower; you seem to keep all your coins; generous.
Note: only there only 3 bits of meta progression unlockable in the demo, the cat that gathers resources, the lightning coil, and the meteor shower; with the rest locked for the demo.
There are also artifacts you can discover, and equip on your necromancer in between your runs.
Controller support is present, as is good old mouse and keyboard.
I found mouse and keyboard control just felt much better and more efficient here, so that is what I used in the above video.
Note: This is an Early look at Necrosmith 2 so any bugs or other oddness is not representative of the final product.
Still, Necrosmith 2 is a fun Indie, 2D, Real Time with Pause, Exploration focused Roguelite Tower Defense game, with a bit of Horde Survival / Vampire Survivors baked in, that is actually good!
Necrosmith 2 is easily well worth a wishlist and a watch.
