In the early 2000’s video games were looking to become more narratively driven experiences, and many of the top selling products were focusing more and more on delivering a succinct story for the player to experience. Following Call of Duty and Max Payne 2 in 2003, Zombie Studios’ 2004 game Shadow Ops: Red Mercury would take Zombie’s Spec Ops shooter series and attempt to combine it with a trendy plot driven adventure with action heroes and huge stakes. Did the developer succeed in their plan to create an exciting story as well as integrate their tried and tested gameplay system?
