Out of all the great demos that I played during the latest Steam Next Fest, Absolum might be the best of the bunch.
After publishing games like Streets Of Rage 4 and TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, Dotemu are striking out with a side-scrolling beat-em-up based on an original IP. It reminds me of Tunche, not only because it’s a roguelike but because it has a striking visual style and hard-hitting combat that’s impossible to resist.
Along with the tried-and-true mechanics that you’ll see in this video, the game includes a forward dash that doubles as a parry. You can parry any attack with a white glow (and thankfully the parry window is quite large), but attacks with a red glow will require you to sidestep or run away. And of course, if you temporarily get the two confused, then you might end up like me and beat the first boss with only 1 HP left.
