AC Unity As Intended for 8 Minutes and 5 Seconds
769I felt like taking a more cinematic approach today towards one of the best stealth missions I think I've ever played.
Since the game's release, this has undoubtedly been the most replayed mission, not just in the entire game but, in my opinion, the entire franchise. You will find literally hundreds of videos of people completing this mission in a million different ways. It has become the poster child of Assassin’s Creed missions and is often held up as the gold standard of what fans want from the highly sought-after black box missions.
These missions allow you, the player, the freedom to complete them however you choose, exploring your environment to discover opportunities on your own and executing the mission in any style you prefer.
All of the missions in Assassin’s Creed Unity were designed with this approach in mind. So why is this particular mission the one everyone talks about?
Well, there are a few obvious reasons. For one, it begins with a breathtaking view of the Notre Dame Cathedral—arguably the most impressive 3D recreation in gaming, in my opinion. Being able to carry out an assassination within one of the world's most famous buildings, designed so meticulously inside and out that you feel as though you're truly there, is reason enough to want to replay it over and over.
But it's not just that. The fact that this mission occurs early in the game certainly helps, as earlier missions tend to have a higher replay rate compared to those toward the end, simply because fewer players finish games.
However, I believe there are more reasons why this mission remains memorable, even a decade later. Its design is practically perfect. It achieves everything a black box mission is meant to, and does so flawlessly.
The mission starts by placing us in a location where we’re given incomplete, yet meaningful, information. We know that two guards possess stolen keys, which we can infer will help us unlock a door and gain access to the building. We spot a contact who is supposed to meet with our target, someone we could silently eliminate and take their place.
Multiple entry points are available, each encouraging us to engage with the core gameplay mechanics—each providing a different way to fuel the assassin fantasy.
We can either steal the keys through social stealth by pickpocketing a guard, use our parkour skills to reach windows and doors that require lock-picking, or employ stealth to eliminate key guards without raising suspicion. But the level doesn't stop there.
For me, a great stealth level isn’t necessarily the hardest or the longest, but one that offers as much replayability as it does immersion.
You can play this mission repeatedly and always come up with a different story, all while exercising your imagination and problem-solving skills against the most beautiful backdrop imaginable.
If every mission in AC Unity were like this one, the game would be held in much higher regard.
