It's like a strategy game, only... um... actually, it IS a strategy game this time! ;D

Today on Ancient DOS Games Gemini's taking a look at Heroes of Might and Magic II, a turn-based strategy game developed by New World Computing and published through The 3DO Company in 1996.

The Might and Magic series dates back to the mid 80's and was several titles in when the Heroes of Might and Magic series started. These titles are clearly drawing inspiration from Master of Magic to some extent (along with direct aspects from a prior game called "King's Bounty" made by the same developers), except where Master of Magic had a lot of depth, Heroes of Might and Magic is much simpler in terms of what you're expected to do and how you go about doing it, thus making this weeks game a very good choice for beginners to the strategy genre, or for people who like strategy games but aren't all that great at them.

Additional Information and Corrections:

* If you'd like to purchase the game on GOG, follow this link: https://www.gog.com/game/heroes_of_might_and_magic_2_gold_edition/?pp=91dfde1d6e005e422f64a59776234f1f4c80b5e4

* A couple things of note since I'm playing the Gold version: The expansion content renames the subtitle since it provides all new standard maps and an all new campaign, but you can still play the original content with the expansion content installed, which is what I was doing. Also, the music is different in the expansion than in the original game.

* Something you may notice in the footage is sometimes a window will pop up with buttons while other times it doesn't. Left clicking in this game is used to select something, once selected, left clicking again will pull up the main window for it with additional buttons to click on, while holding the right mouse buttons down, regardless of what's selected, will often bring up the same information, but without the additional buttons to click on.

* Speaking of pop-ups, there IS a pop-up for the win/lose icons which I didn't realize was there. The only catch is that it's bugged up and you have to click the right mouse button more than once to get it to show up, at which point it will continue to show up fine, though it's possible for this state to be lost depending on what other GUI elements you click on, at which point it again requires two right clicks to bring up the pop-up. I have no idea why it seems as though ONLY this pop-up is bugged up like this... might be DOSBox related, but it's weird all the same. :P

* One important aspect of combat I forgot to elaborate on is Morale and Luck. When morale is higher than normal, units have a chance to get a second turn after they move or attack. When morale is lower than normal, they have a chance to miss their turn. When luck is higher than normal, attacks have a chance to do double damage. When luck is lower than normal, attacks have a chance to do half damage. Special large symbols will animate, along with sound cues, to indicate when these effects occur.
