Adventure Boy takes you to a world full of adventure mixed with some action. The main point of the game is to control this boy and locate the warp portal. The warp portal is the key to access the next level. There are lots of creatures too on each level and they can hurt your character. You need to use your guns to kill them out of your path. Collect the crystals and gold coins on the area so you can save up some money. After each level, you can buy upgrades on the shop. There's also a lottery feature where you can spin for various prizes.

Old school gaming is fun, and because of that, there are quite a lot of new "old school" games out there. Adventure Boy is one of them, and it aims to get that feeling of nostalgia just right.

With the angry-faced protagonist wielding his gun, you'd imagine this to be just another game where you run through and blast everything in sight. Well... while that's -technically- true, the game still has more to it than just that.

The graphics are reminiscent of old-school gaming, but are not simple 8-bit clones. Instead, you've got a varied collection of graphics that work well together providing a fresh face on an old style of gaming. For the most part, the graphics look good. The levels look like they could have come out of an SNES Super Mario game and the baddies look like something from early Playstation RPGs.

The game controls pretty much how any other online platformers control. You do pretty much everything with your keyboard. A and D are used to move forwards and backwards and K is used to jump. You can also double jump, allowing you to reach greater heights. You use J to shoot, and like old school games, you can't aim your weapon. You just fire in whatever direction you happen to be facing. Your first weapon doesn't have much range to it, as it fires upwards in an arc. While you can use this to hit enemies in spots that would normally be hard to reach with straight shots, it does take some getting used to. Luckily though, you'll be able to purchase better weapons as soon as you've got enough coins, of which there are quite a few.

Gameplay-wise, the game isn't too hard. Anyone who grew up with games like Mario or Megaman will have a very easy time at this. Still, it's fun and despite the lack of any Nintendo-hard challenges, it still manages to provide a decent gaming experience that, while nothing innovative, is still a great deal of fun. Later levels do up the difficulty level though, with some jumps approaching the trickiness of older Nintendo platformers. Nowhere near as insanely difficult, but still fun to attempt. And as free side-scrolling shooters go, this is definitely one of the better ones out there. Not quite "great", but certainly above average.

So if you're looking for some old-fashioned side-scrolling gaming, then look no further than Adventure Boy!
