Retro games are a tough kind of cookie. On the one hand, they do evoke the feelings of nostalgia that a lot of people are looking for these days. On the other hand, relying solely on that feeling alone makes for a rather poor game, especially if there's nothing else going for it. Neon Ball, however, does not fall into that category and instead delivers a retro game packed with old-school gameplay while still bringing a whole new flavor to the table.

At first, it looks as if Neon ball is just another platformer, what with its shiny graphics and interesting level design. Instead, it's a game that, while having some platforming elements, is solidly a puzzle game more than anything else.

As aforementioned, the game looks fairly spiffy. It's got the shiny and highly detailed graphics you'd expect from modern games, without going entirely overboard on them. Still, anyone who's grown up playing these sort of games will very easily recognize that while Neon Ball does have flashy new graphics, the elements that make up the levels are things that would've looked right at home on an 8-bit gaming system, only this time around they're a whole lot prettier.

Not only do the graphics look great, but the sounds are of top-notch quality as well. Like the graphics, the sounds come off as aesthetically modernized versions of old-school music. Rather than the tinny chip tunes you'd expect, you're instead treated to neat techno beats and sound effects which sit right at home with the rest of the game.

The game itself is, as stated above, a puzzle game. The object of the game is to get your eponymous neon ball to the exit while picking up as many stars as you can along the way. To do that, you have to jump from beam to beam. When you touch said beam, you begin to move along it, back and forth. When you jump from the beam, the angle at which you take off depends on the direction you're moving. Now here's the catch. After jumping, you have no more control over the ball, and it'll instead ricochet around until it comes in contact with another beam at which point it will stop.

Those controls take some getting used to, but luckily, the first few levels aren't too difficult. Later on though, you'll encounter obstacles that'll kill you if you touch them scattered liberally all over the playing field. It's thus a good idea to make sure that you master the controls as quickly as possible.

So if you're looking for a good retro puzzle game, then look no further than Neon Ball.
