Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today announced the Agnipath scheme calling it a 'historic' move. Through the scheme, the armed forces are looking to induct around 45 thousand soldiers for a 4-year tenure. The soldiers will be called 'Agniveers' and the scheme will also allow women to enroll. After the tenure, 25% of the inductees will be retained and will join the regular forces. Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande says these 'agniveers' will be fully integrated with the regular cadre. People between the ages of 17 and a half to 21 will be inducted and the first batch is scheduled to be ready by July next year. The scheme aims to raise the youthful profile of the armed forces. If the project succeeds, it will also drastically cut the annual revenue and pension bill for the forces.
