You go to bed eight hours before you need to wake up and try to keep your bedroom at a reasonable temperature. What more can you really do to ensure a restful night’s sleep? Aside from picking the best mattress for your needs, there’s a lot you can learn about your own sleep patterns that will help you get the best sleep possible, and Eight Sleep has made this easier to discover than ever.

What would have used to require a trip to a professional sleep lab you can now learn in your own bedroom. Using Eight’s AI-Powered Sleep Coach, you can keep accurate track of important information including:

Breaths per minute
Heart rate
Room temperature
Bed temperature
Time spent in REM sleep
Time spent lying in bed awake before falling asleep
Time spent lying in bed before getting up in the morning
Tosses and turns
And much more!

It works using a polyester cover equipped with wiring near the chest area that picks up on biological indicators, and, in my experience, it’s very reliable.

A Renewed Approach to Restful Sleep

Eight Sleep has been using this technology for the past couple of years. During this time, they’ve been able to capture 200 billion data points from real people across the country. Using this wealth of knowledge, they are now able to provide personalized information that can help you better understand your sleep patterns, both good and bad. A few examples of messages you could get when you wake up include:

Good
"Great job! You got 7 hours and 43 minutes of sleep last night. That is 30 minutes more than your average this month."
"You sleep like a rock! This week you've tossed and turned on average 10 times per night. This is much lower than the average for people your age, which is 25 toss and turns per night."
Bad
"Your percentage of REM sleep was 15% last night. This is lower than the healthy range of 20-25%. Lack of REM is caused by lack of sleep and can lead to fatigue and in the long term memory loss."
“Is something on your mind at night? You spent 54 minutes in bed before you fell asleep. Eight users take about 15 minutes on average to fall asleep.”

That last example was one I got a couple of nights ago, and it actually helped me gauge the tracker’s ability to differentiate someone who is awake from someone who is asleep. That night, I had watched a 45 minute documentary on my iPad before falling asleep. This was very accurately able to determine when I fell asleep. (For best results, I’d avoid lying in bed when you’re not sleeping or unplug your hub if you’re just lying in bed watching tv).

AI At Its Best

Artificial intelligence is all around us, and it’s changing the way we live a little more every day. Over the course of the next 13 minutes, we’ll be taking a close look at the many exciting ways in which it’s allowing savvy sleepers the ability to better understand their patterns to make the most out of bedtime.
