--------------------------------------------------DESCRIPTION--------------------------------------------------

The marines need to stick together the most where their combined fire-power can overcome their fragility. They are the slowest to reinforce however, being only able to drop down 6 units every 30-40 seconds. Not only that, but reinforcements only come down at landing beacons. I would definitely consider trying the marine campaign only after getting a grasp on the other two.

Like the other campaigns, the second mission is particularly brutal. You will face large numbers of praetorians without the means to deal significant damage to armoured targets, being forced to rely on mass infantry. You get a lot of credits to replenish losses, but having to kill the alien queen whilst also completing the mission in under 23 minutes means you can ill afford the time to replenish losses. The best tactic I have found for this mission is to send synthetics out to lure aliens, then kite them around your forces.

The game does not have great unit mapping and that becomes painfully obvious with the Marines. You may notice that a significant portion of my losses occur as a result of trying to squeeze my squad through a narrow passageway and some of the units getting confused and running off in random directions. The aliens are quick enough to outrun most everything (and if a few die, it’s not a major loss to the aliens), and the predators are usually tough enough to be able to last on their own. With the marines however, their fragile nature combined with their slow speed often means that those sent out by themselves will quickly be surrounded and killed. A large portion of the later levels which occur mostly in confined areas revolved around trying to babysit units that start splitting off from the group. As a result, it is easy to lose troops or to be attacked when you are unprepared trying to round these units up.

Marines tend to fair well against Aliens, but struggle against predators, especially in the later missions. Military Hydras and blazers are capable of tearing apart your squad whilst remaining out of vision range. The best way to deal with these units is to have several snipers around, and either using an upgraded sentry gun to spot, or running them down with synthetics to provide vision.

I tend to stay away from flamethrower units, except for the final mission where they are necessary to kill alien carriers without having them spewing face huggers across your squad. This is because when runners are killed by fire, they explode, turning them into lethal suicide bombers when their normal attacks do not do much damage. You will notice in Mission 2 that my flamethrower unit is switched to no attack for the majority of the mission for this reason. I would also highly recommend sticking medics to no attack stance.

Focus mostly on smartgunners when facing aliens, snipers when facing Predators and Sadar troopers when facing heavily armoured targets (Ravagers, Queens, Predguns and Shrines). Try to protect your valuable heavy hitters to the centre inside your squad and trooper units on the outside. When possible, have synthetics at the front line. Even if they get killed, if it was not by flame attacks or Drone acid spits, they can be revived by Comm techs. Using this method, at the end of mission 4, I was capable of destroying several PredGuns and an artefact without technically sustaining any casualties 55:53)
