In this episode, I am proud to debut my newest 3D printed creation, the NEStoration™ Switcheroo™ and Nitro Refresh™, two-in-one cleaning devices for the Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, Switch Lite, Nintendo DS, 2DS, 3DS, along with the cartridges and variant systems. Whew!

For quite some time I have been busy creating and designing new products to make them available through my 3D printer store. I've offered storage cases, light boxes, and other items. My most recent additions to my lineup were my NEStoration No Cut region-free mod kits for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and the Super NES Jr which allows you to play Super Famicom games on the SNES or SNES Jr. The community has responded quite well to those, and I have been thrilled about that. My latest design addresses a need for handheld gamers, specifically fans of the Nintendo Switch & Nintendo DS, 2DS, and 3DS systems and games. I'm thrilled to introduce the Switcharoo and Nitro Refresh Cleaning Devices for systems and cartridges.

While cleaning kits have been available for some time for retro systems such as the original NES and the Sega Genesis, there hasn't been good cleaning solutions for the Nintendo Switch family of systems and cartridges, nor the Nintendo DS and 3DS lineup of systems. I have been working on a solution for quite some time, ironic choice of words since it actually uses no solution at all.

One of my major goals was to make these cleaners a 2-in-1 design, capable of cleaning the system and cartridge contacts with one unit. I also wanted these to be completely 3D printed, this way I could control the manufacturing, design, and overall production quality of the units.

For the cleaning surfaces themselves, I looked to something from back in my RC racing days, specifically Fiberglass Pens. See, we used fiberglass pens for years to clean electric motors in RC racing. They are lightly abrasive and remove carbon buildup from internal components in motors, just like what we encounter with video game cartridges. With this knowledge and experience, I decided to utilize a fiber-reinforced filament for my cleaning surfaces. This allows me to create something that did not use any harsh chemicals, that I could quickly and easily manufacture, and that would not be overly harsh on the pins on the systems or the cartridges.

While I wanted to make something that was a two-in-one design that would clean both the system and the cartridges designing the system cleaner was the easy part. The hard part was getting the pin spacing correct to fit around the plastic components on the cartridges themselves, especially on the DS side of things. The cartridge slot took multiple revisions, test prints, resizing, measuring, until I was finally able to get the cleaning components within the contacts on the DS and 3DS cartridges.

Unlike other cleaning solutions on the market to clean cartridges and systems, the NEStoration Switcharoo & Nitro Refresh do not use sandpaper, lapping paper, or any sort of solvent to clean the surfaces. I am keenly aware of the opinions of people like Voultar and Bob from Retro RGB, two people I greatly respect and consider friends, I wanted to design something that would be less abrasive and harsh on the brass contacts that make up our systems and our cartridges. This is why I went with a fiber reinforced filament for my cleaning surfaces. Going this route provides a cleaning surface that will remove tough, stuck-on carbon deposits while not being overly harsh on the pads and materials.

In the end, this took me about 5 months to design and perfect between other projects, and I'm proud to say that these are available now for order. Best of all, these are designed to be inexpensive for you to pick up. These are relatively inexpensive for me to produce and I wanted to pass that value on to the end user. As such a single Nintendo Switch or 3DS system and console cleaner will only be $7.99, or you can get a convenient two-pack for $12.99.
