Altdeus Beyond Chronos - VR Gameplay Valve Index
Sadly, nowhere near as exciting as the summary may lead you to believe. The focus here is not on any sort of giant robot or mecha adventure. It's purely a VN. If you're looking for action or any sort of satifsying combat, look elsewhere. If you're big on story content, then Altdeus will be pretty interesting.
First off, there is no positional calibration or option to recenter your position. This game forced you to sit in front of your monitor. With motion controls. That's just a dumb idea. Period. There's no reason the game couldn't allow me to play while standing up or to recenter/recalibrate from whatever point in the room I wanted. Not having this feature is fairly inexcusable at this stage in the game.
Graphically the game was beautiful from an anime perspective. You really do feel like you're inside an anime or a VN. Especially the intro and that switch from a 2D intro to being inside the intro. That was amazing! I can't stress that enough. That. Was. Amazing.
The mech cockpit and those holligraphic rings and arms when you take control! *cheffs kiss* Beautiful!
The audio was also great. I recognized pretty much all of the voice actors from other shows. These were experienced voice actors/actressess and it showed. Important to note that I'm talking the subs and originaal Japanese voice cast, not the dubs. Insert elitest weeb/snob comment here. I'll own it.
The story was definitely interesting but I don't think this is my medium of choice here. I'm big on anime. I'm big on story in my games. Inspecting every little strawberry or juice cup, waiting for a loading bar and several more button presses to get a 30 second conversation just isn't really how I want that story delivered.
Which segueys into the gameplay. If you're a fan of VNs in general then this is definitely your thing. If you're looking for action robot combat with a good story, look elsewhere. The 'combat' was exceedingly disappointing and lack luster. The robot control in general was fairly pathetic. This is all about standard VN mechanics. Lots of standing around and reading/listening to discussions over actually doing/playing a game.
Personally I kind of feel that the Steam summary is a bit deceptive. I expected more action. This could be entirely on me though.
IE: "Converse with other characters and seek clues in the Adventure Section. The Mecha Battle Section is where things get rough, as you enter the cockpit of Makhia, the towering humanoid anti-Meteora combat weapon."
Nothing really "got rough" in the Mecha Battle Section. This really could have been a cutscene for all the agency I felt I had over the fight. It was just me watching story unfold from the first person. I didn't feel like I was playing/fighting in a mech.
Bottom line. If you play flat VNs this is an amazing VR VN experience you should absolutely try. If you're not a big fan of VNs then you're probably not going to be too interested with this one. I will give it a thumbs up because for what it is, it does a really great job. I do wish they didn't try to make the combat sound more exciting than it actually is but it's not bad enough to warrant a negative review.
