Ven VR Adventure - VR Gameplay Valve Index
Both exactly what I was expecting and also not. One of the only games with a built in FPS counter in the graphics settings. Why didn't anyone else thing of that!?
Starting off with some issues.
Getting tripped up on inch high (relative to Vex) steps. Even worse, having that behavior be inconsistent... Hopefully this is just a QOL fix that comes down the line. It's annoying but not game breaking.
Head direction changing your running direction is a bit odd to adjust to. You do eventually adapt but it's easy to run yourself off a cliff unintentionally.
Something about the butt slam. I can't put my finger on it and I can't decide if it's me or the game but something just doesn't feel right with it.
They did get a lot of other stuff right though. The menu interaction was smooth and polished. None of the motion felt like it would turn any stomachs. Just a lot of good VR decisions around the interface.
Sound was very well done. Loved the background music and how it seamlessly switched up to a more threatening tempo the closer we got to the boss. Great tension builder. The voice acting was pretty good too.
Graphics were great and exactly what I'd expect from a platformer. Definitely brought back some good old Crash Bandicoot nostalgia.
Gameplay is about what you'd expect. You run. You jump. You jump on things. Don't let things touch you. Don't miss the things you want to jump on. Basic platformer gameplay.
The First person gameplay though. That's pretty lacking. I was not at all impressed with the first boss fight. It was, in a word, boring. A little tedious. Maybe gimmicky? It felt forced into the game. Clunky to swap between dodging with Vex and throwing with... me? I think I would have enjoyed it more if it had just ben Vex fighting. Which surprises me to say since it was probably the biggest draw prior to playing the game.
The story is mildly interesting but let's face it, we don't play platformers for story. It's nice when it's there but it's not a necessity. Several pieces don't make a lot of sense overall. Like how did Vex even know how to make weapons let alone learn to use them in what looked like a single day... Nitpicky stuff.
Unfortunately it looks like there are only 12 levels. This doesn't feel like a lot of content to be honest. The bang for you buck will likely come from replaying missions to collect all the things and if you want to compete in the leaderboards.
Ven VR Adventure is an enjoyable platformer experience. There's room for improvement but it offers exactly what it advertises. If you're a big platformer fan then go ahead and pick this up. Otherwise, you might want to wait for a sale to give it a try as $29.99 for an estimated 3-4 hour game feels a little steep.
