Altered Beast 1cc Playthrough | Megadrive/ Genesis | Real Hardware
AKA Juuouki in Japan.
Review - This is a game I used to play at my friend’s house as a kid so I never owned until I was an adult. This was originally a pack-in game for the Megadrive and while never a top tier game, it was a great showcase for what the Megadrive could do upon launch. The gameplay seems very easy but any mistakes can really be punishing. If you don’t defeat 3 blue pigs in a row to get the power ups to upgrade to a beast, the level gets longer until you do. This can have a detrimental effect to the whole run if you miss even one due to the limited health.
At least the Megadrive version has an options screen (B+START on the title screen) where you can increase the health and your lives, unlike other console versions. You can choose any level from the options screen to practise. This is incredibly generous for a game of this era, especially for such a short game. But it doesn’t mean it is easy in any way. There is still a lot of practice required to be able to go through a full run.
3 of the 5 bosses have cheese methods of destroying them without getting hit which is a something any kid tries first before strategy they are satisfying to find.
The graphics are great and the music is memorable. The digitized speech is also impressive.
The gameplay is slow, but it allows for combat which allows you to think what to do rather than rushing in and hoping for the best.
It’s also fun how quickly you can turn into the beasts where you turn into an absolute, well, beast!
They are almost invincible before you get to the boss and a great reward for the hardships of being a lowly human at the beginning of each level.
I had fought the last boss a few times before this run but he never did this attack pattern where he keeps charging at me as I can charge through him. He never changed his attacks after that and it made the remainder of the fight super easy. I don’t know if it’s a bug or feature, but I was grateful as the boss fight is normally very long.
I will always have fond memories of this game and I’m sure my path will cross with it again someday.
