Thunder Force III Playthrough | Megadrive/ Genesis | Real Hardware
7Review – This is a huge improvement over the second game and led the way on how the Thunder Force franchise would be in the future. Gone are the over-the-top view levels, and in it’s place are just side scrolling levels. There are only 7 levels but they are a good length and you can even choose the order of the first 4 levels before being force into doing the last 3 levels in order. This is great for practise.
The graphics really push the Megadrive, with loads of special effects going at a fast speed. But the number of moving things going on at the same time is also impressive. Especially the weapons. There is a great selection of screen filling weapons, and you can change them on the fly which encourages you to form strategies for every encounter. You can also change your speed, which is useful on particular parts.
The difficulty I would say is just right. It’s still very challenging but not so hard that I had to use an emulator with save states to practise bosses before going for my real run, like I had to with Thunder Force 2 and 4. The game is generous with lives and continues, so you get a decent chance to practise the later levels without getting taken out immediately and having to start again. The last proper level gave me a hard time and I had to continue twice, so I cut this bit out as it would make the video too long.
This is a much better game than Thunder Force 2. Not quite as good as Thunder Force 4 (which is absolute top quality), but due to the difficulty being fair to a human player, I would recommend this game to anyone the most.
