A playthrough of Sony Imagesoft's 1991 isometric 3D platform puzzle game for the Nintendo Game Boy, Altered Space: A 3D Alien Adventure.

Altered Space is a fantastic second entry to Software Creations trio of 3D puzzlers, following Solstice (NES) and preceeding Equinox (SNES), with all three having been done by the same development team. That includes a soundtrack by Geoff Follin, and for fans of chip music, you know that's a great thing. Since the music resets when you switch rooms you don't often get to hear it, so I've appended a loop of the main theme to the end of the video (complete with an awkward Humphrey dance routine hosted in the tutorial room).

Instead of the fantasy settings of Solstice and Equinox, Altered Space provides a futuristic sci-fi setting, placing you in control of the unfortunately named astronaut Humphrey as he explores and solves puzzles in his quest to escape from an alien spacecraft before being killed by any number of robots, aliens, spike traps, or running out of breathable air.

The gameplay is much like any other game of its type, though it's one of only two Game Boy titles in its style (the other being Rare's awesome Monster Max, published by Titus). As you can imagine, the GB screen is really not ideally suited to the amount of detail in the graphics, and it's a bit cramped for the size of the screen, but it's hard to deny that this is an excellent looking game.

Altered Space never reached the levels of recognition Solstice and Equinox gained despite the Nintendo Power feature it was given, but if you enjoy puzzlers that can sometimes gets super-sadistic on you (argh... those jumps in stage 8!!), this is an excellent choice.

I noticed that they're seems to be little on YouTube about this game, save for a few TAS runs that avoid much of the game. Here's my attempt at getting it some exposure. I certainly don't go for 100%, but I don't rush through the game either, and don't use any warps to skip any of the eight levels. Hope you enjoy it!

Recorded in Retroarch with the DMG shader for that classic Game Boy look.
